Abelardo Figueiredo and Marlene

Exclusive interview to Max Eduardo Ziemer

Celebrity for having produced some musical comedies in Brazil and one of the pioneers of the television, Abelardo Figueiredo also directed Marlene Dietrich in the season of shows in the Record Theater.

“My part was to assay the teatral part of the show, Nilton Travesso took care of the televising part, Billy Hitchcock was the musical director and his wife Sonia Shaw assayed with her and the dancers the choreography, the same one that she presented in the United States, during music “Maybe I'll Come Back”. These dancers belonged to the Ballet of the Museum of Art of São Paulo and them they had made many works for me.

It exactly had that law by her with the height of the uprising of the legs of the dancers, none could raise the leg highest of her, the legs had to be in the maximum in the waist.

But the performance of the dancers was so good that they had finished following Marlene in her presentation in Buenos Aires.”

disciplines: “Marlene was extremely professional and very disciplined.
For example, when the Sonia Shaw assayed the choreography with her and found that she had to interrupt or to repeat something that already seemed perfect, Marlene immediately accepted the order without no problem.

A curiosity was that some blouses had been provided for Marlene, which she went changing the measure that sweated during the assays.”

Rapidity: “It was impressive the rapidity of Marlene changed her clothes during the show. After the number of `Maybe, I'll Come Back', with the masculine suit, entered on the other hand of stage and reappeared just for another one already with that super magnificent suit that she disclosed the perfect brusts of her and with the coat of white pens.
It was perfectly calculated, this masculine suit was already previously prepared with zíper to leave fast . There were four women Who helped her to put the dress while the orchestra were executing themes that she sang. All of this lasted accurately two minutes”.

Bossa Nova: “At the time Bossa Nova was in the top and once a time I went to take a walk with Marlene, Laurinha, my wife, Tom Jobim and Tereza, his wife at the time.
Tom showed some songs to Marlene and she liked so much, she found the melodies very pretty, although to find odd at the beginning, she did not understand well that mixture of samba, jazz, guitarr… I still remember very well the way as she pronounced the term `bossa nova”

Burt Bacharach: I knew very well Burt Bacharach .
I and Laurinha, become very friend of him. He still was unknown, at the time, only as the Marlene´s pianist
Burt had some romances in Brazil, also with a very known actress at the time… Marlene knew about it and had a terrible jealousy.
Years later I received an invitation printed matter for a show from him and Dione Warick in Los Angeles and almost I fell to backwards, I did not imagine that pianist that I knew was Burt Bacharach”

Fazano: “After that season of the Record Theater, she made a presentation in the Fazano Restaurant, when it still functioned in the Conjunto Nacional at Paulista Avenue. It was a simpler presentation, something more experimental, almost a recital. They did not have exchanges of clothes nor the orchestra, only she and the pianist.”

Affection: “Even having a certain distance, Marlene was a nice person, after finishing the season in Brazil she went to Buenos Aires and send a card for me from there”

Marlene e Nilton Travesso

Depoimento exclusivo a Max Eduardo Ziemer

Marlene and the director Nilton Travesso

A Exclusive interview by Max Eduardo Ziemer

The director of theater and television Nilton Travesso had the great privilege of being scaled to direct the show of Marlene Dietrich in the Record Theater and the Fasano Restaurant in São Paulo:

“When knowing that Marlene would come, I could not to be a little worried, therefore we never know what an artist of this style thinks regarding Brazil, how she is informed, how she will to treat the people, etc….And I already had directed names like Cacilda Becker, Ziembinsky… but Marlene Dietrich for me came from another world”

Nilton remembers: “I, she and the pianist Pass the hole night only assaying the light marking, we start ten o´clock and were until the 6 of the morning. The pianist was Burt Bacharach, still in beginning of career and he had more or less my age.

Only in the following day we assay with the dancers, the best ones that I could find in São Paulo, and with the complete orchestra”.

Claim “In the way of this assay, Marlene interrupted and with all elegance she called me to discretion and said well low - Says to your dancers Who is the star here, respect my age and they do not raise the leg more than I.”
The show in Record Theater was a success (unhappyly at the time not yet we had video-tape) and after this she initiated her season in the Fasano Restaurant.

The show was practically the same and the same markings of light had been used to advantage.

Accident - A curious episode was an accident that happened in the Fasano Restaurant hours before the show.

A careless musician left a door to beat in the fingers of Nilton.
The pain was horrible and Marlene, seeing the scene, stopped everything, she took me for her dressing-room and she asked for a bucket with ice:
“Suddenly I, a young director ahead of the “Blue Angel” , being very well treated… and she gorgeous in a pink suit, the skin very white, very pretty… the show finished being late therefore”

The season in the Fasano repeated the success of Record Theater:

“It was amazing, I, a young of 24 years, there in the backstage watching that show, observing the way as she moved, the elegance, the personality and the way as she faced the public.”

After the ending of the season, before leaving, Marlene left a gift for the young Nilton Travesso, a photo of her autographed showing her gratefulness, which it He still keeps.
“The chance to work with Marlene Dietrich is something moves me, a great moment of luck in my career, It is to be in the right place and in the right time!

To work with people like Marlene, Louis Armstrong, Charles Asnavour, Sarah Vaughan is certainty something that made me to grow culturally, therefore each one has its way to act and Marlene was super chic, professional and very disciplined, thing that lacks in much people nowadays.

I always repeat in my lectures a quote by Ziembinsky that he says the necessary to have success in the artistic career, 50% are talent and 50% are work.”

Auction of kisses in São Paulo
The season in the Record Theater repeated the Rio´s success . Of this time her manager was Mr. Paulo Machado de Carvalho Filho. The open night (August 4) was a beneficient spectacle to the construction of the hospital for correction of the defects in the face.
The show was presented by Raoul Rolien, Brazilian actor who already had worked in Hollywood in 30´s and for very little he was not the romantic pair of Marlene in “the Garden of Alah”.

The open night, that initiated 22 hours, was live transmission by the TV Record but photos during the show were forbidden.

A funny fact that some still remember is on the famous white coat that she used in the show, because of the heat, released small fuzz that was floating in the environment of the theater .
In her last show of this season, August 9, also had an auction of kisses in favor of the same cause.

Presented by Blota Júnior , the auction had a very expressive participation.
The values of launch varied to the place in accordance with where they were given, cheapest they were in stage, later they came the kisses in PASSARELA and most expensive on the armchair where it found the interested party.

To the total, three men had been contemplated with the kiss of Marlene.
After the season Marlene distributed bottles of whisky for that they had worked with her , distributed tip, also for a young woman Who helped her to dress.

- Charmant (encantador)
- A sra.
-“ The Devil is a Woman”
- Você prefere fazer shows ou cinema?
- Shows. No show estou só, a responsabilidade é toda minha.
Sinto-me realizada. Sou a única mulher não frustrada do mundo

Algumas outras Frases

Cocktail Party for the press in São Paulo

In the same day when she arrived in São Paulo, Marlene participated (for almost one hour) of a press conference in the Fasano Restaurant carried through at night. The Cocktail was offered by the promoters of its coming the São Paulo and it was also received by about 200 personalities from the artistic and cultural world of the city.
When arriving, Marlene smiled, she crossed the hall, and sat down in a table, informing that she was the disposal of the journalists.

She answered some questions, in French, English and German, since her career until artistic problems in general.

During the interview she drank whisky and smoked.

Her lighter and case were of gold. Practically without jewels, only one old gold bracelet with brilliants and a great emerald.
Here they are some phrase-answers from the Blue Angel:
- What you found about president Juscelino Kubitscheck?
- Charmant (charming)

-How it was your meeting with Sternberg? They had had some contact before the known episode, that is, the presence of him in the representation of the “Zwei Kravatten”?
- Not, I did not have any contact before “Zwei Kravatten” . Don´t believe the histories of journalists.
- Mrs. You had declared that you would not make cinema with any nobody, after Sternberg, why you accepted to make the film “The song of songs”, with Mamoulian?

- It Was Sternberg who changed my idea. He wanted that I appeared at least one time without him.
- It is truth that you appeared in “Street without Joy”, of Pabst, with Greta Garbo?
- Not
- The actress Louise Brooks had some influence in the creation of your personage in “blue Angel”?
- Not, even so I like the actress, she did not have any influence
- Which is your favorite film?
- “The Devil is the Woman”
- Why?
- Because in this film I interpret a very bad woman but in the end finishes she becoming good. I am certain if the film was presented now, would have an enormous success.
- “Blonde Venus”, film where Sterberg did show you a little bit more “human” for the first time, as a mother who sacrifices herself for her son, would have some fact to her personal situation?
- I believe that not. We looked histories, and this was one. Remember that the personage finished, although everything, prostitute.
- Why you learned to say the French so well?
- Because I adore France
- You prefer to make shows or cinema?
- Shows. In the cinema, it has much people, the success depends on many factors. In the show I am alone, the responsibility is all mine. It is more difficult, for certain. But I have chance to express me completely.
I Improvise all the time, because I always have a different public. It was in the army that I learned to improvise.
I passed three years presenting me for the soldiers and this was my great school. Before I not wise person nothing.
- It is truth that you would not like to come back to Germany?
- In fact, she would be laborious for me. My friends are died. But I would come back if I had chance of a new work.
- How you defines yourself as actress?
- I am much more a personality than an actress
- Why?
- I do not have any ambition and all the actresses have. It comes from Shakespeare this ambition, when he says that he desires to interpret a lion.
- You could then live without stage?
- Yes, I work still to only gain the life.
- Are you not in conditions to stop?
- Not. In the United States the taxes are very raised. Do you know how much is a race of taxi in the United States?
- You have some commitment for your return to the United States?
- Not. I find that I deserve some rest. By the way, I work daily in the radio, New York. They write me letters and I answer, here it is another uninterrupted work
- We knew that the journalist and director Geraldo Queiroz commented to you about the part of “Madame Clessy” from the play “Vestido de Noiva” written by Nelson Rodrigues, and you would have liked…
- In fact, they had spoken to me of the part and from the personage, but I not yet received the text, they had been to order for me.

- You abandoned the instrumental music in your youth, because of an inflammation in the hands. Have you some frustration for the career change?
- Not. I feel myself carried through. I am the only woman not frustrated of the world

Some other Phrases

“I am a creation of Sternberg, he made me”
“The shows that I present now are idealized and prepared for myself”
“I do not have preference for any language when I am interpreting my songs”
“Burt is a dream. I am just here now because he said me to come to this party
“I did not have time in Rio to hear Brazilian music. I wait to hear in São Paulo, if I will not have work in such a way as there”
“I knew Vinícius de Moraes in Paris. In a night while I sang French songs in a club, they had two Brazilians that they drank whisky in a table, one of them was Vinícius.

Marlene did not feel comfortable being filmed, asked for to (diverse times) illuminant them disconnect the reflectors and fought with the photographers because she did not want to be photographed of low for top.

Although this, took care of likeably to the much order of autographs. One man talked with Marlene in German. He asked for an autograph in a handkerchief. Marlene unfolded the handkerchief on the table and showed to feel the perfume in the same. He said that the handkerchief was not perfumed and she observed: “It does not matter. Wanting I obtain to feel perfume in any handkerchief”. Marlene inhaled again demonstrating pleasure and autographed it.

Marlene took care of to all with a wide smile, that in the deep, seemed plus a some professional thing.

When leaving, she gave the arm to the two civil guards presents to cocktail. She praised their clothes , took photos with them and left smiling “I Prefer to be protected thus, to be encircled with soldiers, therefore I have the impression to be imprisoned”
After the Cocktail Party Dietrich went with her team to dinner. After the dinner went to the Record theater, to know the place. Marlene would have adored the decoration of her dressing-room prepared by Paulinho de Carvalho, made her to remember Paris

Marlene me fez perder o medo!
Marlene went down the stairs of the airplane, smiling, with care, hiding the legs.

Those that had been with the hope to see the millionaire legs of Marlene had disappointed. The periodical Ultima Hora published: “Marlene hid the legs: She arrived of long dress”.

She was wearing a cote of shantung sand color and a hat of the same color.
Aliás, Sinatra também é mencionado na letra de “Maybe I’ll Come Back”.

Dietrich in Rio

- Look Me Over Closely (Gilkyson)
- You´re the Cream in My Coffee( De Sylva- Brown - Handerson)
- - My Blue Heaven (Whiting - Donaldson)
- - The Boys in the Backroom (Loesser- Hollander)
- - Das Lied ist aus (Frag nicht warum) (W. Reisch - Robinson - Stolz)
- - Je tire ma reverence (P. Bastia)
- - Alright, Okay, You Win ( S. Wyche - M. Watts)
- - Makin´ Whoopee ( G. Kahn - Donaldson)
- - I´ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face ( Loewe - Lerner)
- - One for My Baby (and One More for the Road) ( Mercer - Arlen)
- - Maybe I´ll Come Back ( H. Jeffrey - C.L. Cooke)
- - Luar do sertao ( Catulo da Paixão Cearense)

“Dietrich in Rio”

In my opinion is the the Best Marlene Dietrich´s record. More than an excellent quality of the sound, excellent arrangements by Burt Bacharach and an unquestionable repertoire, the joy from a happy period is transparent clearly in the voice of Marlene , that never was so sagacious, alive and witty.
The record was not total living record, some parts had been recorded in a studio in the Rio´s downtown, even so it´s possible to listen applauses and noise from plates and cuterys.

The choice for this option I will comment here later. I always pay attention how some takes are very seemed versions of “Dietrich in Rio” as for example “Das Lied ist Aus”.

The record starts with a magnificent version of “Look Me Over Closely” with a new arrangement, faster, total different of the version known from the record “Cafe of Paris”. The record also brings classics as “I´ve Grown Accustomed you the Her Face” (music that is part of the musical comedy “My Fair Lady') and “One for My Baby”, a consecrated “masculine” music by the voice of Frank Sinatra. By the way, Sinatra is also mentioned in the lyric of “Maybe I'll Come Back”.

The record finishes with a emotive version of “Luar do Sertão” written by Catulo da Paixão Cearense. According to the singer Cauby Peixoto, he would have to teach Marlene to sing verses in Portuguese of the classic brasilian song . The biography of Cauby brings a curious photo of both together in new york.

Dietrich in Rio - Look Me Over Closely (Gilkyson)- You´re the Cream in My Coffee( De Sylva- Brown - Handerson) - - My Blue Heaven (Whiting - Donaldson)- - The Boys in the Backroom (Loesser- Hollander)- - Das Lied ist aus (Frag nicht warum) (W. Reisch - Robinson - Stolz)- - Je tire ma reverence (P. Bastia) - - Alright, Okay, You Win ( S. Wyche - M. Watts) - - Makin´ Whoopee ( G. Kahn - Donaldson)- - I´ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face ( Loewe - Lerner)- - One for My Baby (and One More for the Road) ( Mercer - Arlen) - - Maybe I´ll Come Back ( H. Jeffrey - C.L. Cooke)- - Luar do sertao ( Catulo da Paixão Cearense)

Ibrahin Sued e Marlene

Ibrahin Sued and Marlene

One of the most famous society repórter from of Brazil, Ibrahin Sued remembers in his memories “20 Anos de Caviar” the visit of Marlene Dietrich in Brazil.

In his book he counts that he was one of the cogitated ones to finance the season of seven days in the Copacabana. he refusing… and he repented! Who financed the season of Marlene was Chuck Woodward. Ibrahin detaches the success of the nights in the Golden Room and the young aspect of Marlene: “with her almost 60 years, Marlene had an agility such that surpassed all the girls who participated of the show.”

Age: With friends in common like Noel Coward and Jean Cocteau, Ibrahin remembers an episode in special: “A night, I offered to her to one supper in “Au Bom Gourmet”; Marlene, gorgeous, always very elegant. Suddenly I dont know how, the colloquy slid for the age problem. Marlene, calm, with an enigmatic smile in her lips, said a definitive phrase: - I don´t pay attention of the pass time; who want to remain young, will be always young.”

The season of seven days was a tremendous success and had a renewal attempt, but Marlene already had another international commitment. Ibrahin Sued folloies she until the airport in her farewell.

Naquela noite toda a TV mais movimentada do que nunca, all because Marlene ia cantar.
E cantou "Falling in Love Again", "The Boys in the Backroom"

Intervalo
O corredor do estúdio estava cround e opened way quando ela passou.
Everyone who saiam do Estúdio da TV Tupi eram vaiados. Gritos e risadas: "Olhem a Marlene!"

Marlene on TV Tupi

Marlene Dietrich made her first appearance in television. It was in the extinct TV Tupi in Rio De Janeiro.

Into the studio nobody did not enter, only the orchestra and the members of the team. In that night all was bustling more than never, all because Marlene went to sing. The show was marked for half past ten.

In roon of audience a little television was on, the chairs completely busy, people seated in the soil and up. It had an immense curiosity. Jací Campos (popular director and producer of the television, known by " Camera 1") appeared in scene, dressing smoking and serving as master-of-ceremony to present Marlene.

The scene was pretty and simple: just a clear curtain and a candelabrum. Then that lean and beautiful figure appeared. She was Marlene. She looked at the câmera and said " Hello" , with that serious and soft voice. The personality of Marlene conquered soon the audience.

The star answered in English, Jací Campos translated to the public and made new questions. Marlene smiles and spoke about her life, her career, how she started, about Joseph Von Sternberg, about America, on having been soldad in the war, on medals that she received... And sang " Falling in Love Again" , " The Boys in the Backroom"

Interval
Marlene was with a golden dress, of long sleeves, without cuts off and without transparency, at the time, it would be impossible in the television to use one of her dresses of gauze, ranks for on the body.

Later she received a bouquet of colorful palms. Marlene smiled. She sang one more time. She said with Jací Campos.
She said farewell, and went away.

The corridor of the studio was cround and opened way when she passed. Quickly she was into her dressing-room, while behind her it was a wave of curiosity and admiration. In the street there were a multitude waiting for her. Everyone who leaves the Studio of the TV Tupi was hissing

Later appeared one component the orchestra, a lady of red hair spotted, around 50 years old. Shouts and laugh: " See the Marlene! "
The poor woman not wise person where to put herself. Wait and more wait. To be able to leave Marlene had to be assisted by the Shock Policy.

She, however, was smarter. She crossed, for as walking, a terrace that bound the two buildings of then the TV Tupi ( old Urca´s Casino) and left in the other building. She took a car, slightly, and went away

The people recognized her, the automobile almost stopped for the traffic, the multitude ran behind, the car followed and there Marlene was leaving behind herself that mix of mystery and curiosity.

O Show

Durante a música “Maybe I’ll Come Back “ ela dançava um número tipo can-can com seis coristas.

The Show

There is no doubt that the show of Marlene Dietrich in the Copacabana Palace was the biggest success of public in one season that already had presented weight names like Margot Fonteyne, Nat " King" Cole, Juliete Greco and Sarah Vaughan.

She made shows in the days 27, 28, 29 30, 31 July and August 2. She sang in English, French and German.

In the second part she appeared with her masculine suit and a cane. During the music “Maybe I'll Come Back “ she danced a can-can number with six dancers. She cried when singing “Lili Marlene" , made the orchestra to change of tone two times (it had little assay) and finished the show kissing her pianist (Burt Bacharach) in the mouth.

In the biography written by Charles Highan, a fan of Marlene, called John Marven, presents a good impression about this night in the Copacabana: “It was incredible! I never saw nothing like this. The auditorium was completely crazy and when she entered, it had a tremendous shout in unison, as one alone voice.

She started to sing a number and the shout continued in such a way and, that she had to stop and to start again.

When the first half finished, something happened before that I do not believe to have happened in none another place, before or later. The spectators had run to the stage

Those that had not been able to go up to the stage, had been of foot in their tables.
Almost in the end of the number, the spectators took the yokes and the knives folloied her beating in their plates. It was incredible.

No longer final, when she was with her suits of man, and reaching her bigger emotion, she sang as man " I' ve Grown Accustomed you the Her Face" , the whole world started to cry and people could hear hiccups of hundreds of people in the darkness".

In this open night it had also who complained of the organization and the supercapacity, therefore the impression that it gave is that they had been sold more tables than the place allowed.

Probably it was the record of public of the Golden Room. The cold food arrived on the tables and the heroic waiters exactly were with bad humor.

It did not have space to serve. The set of " girls" assayed only some hours and the orchestra failed two times.
However, probably the most thing marked the performance of Marlene Dietrich was not her show, and yes, her image.

The Manchete magazine published: “When the show finished and the applauses had over, the room were full of feminine commentaries. " How wonder at 57 years old to have a body like this! “
For the visa, the women worried more about the youth of Marlene Dietrich, her perpetual beauty and her agility when dancing than the show".

Marlene e Jucelino

Marlene and Jucelino

In 1959 the Brazilian seat of government still was in Rio De Janeiro and frequent important personalities that they came to Brazil, visited the president of the republic. Soon, the colloquy continued in French, language that JK spoke correctly, therefore it was scholarship holder in Paris and inhabitant of " rive gauche".
The colloquy also drew out in a nice climate of with good laughter. She thanked the president the innumerable tests of affection that received in Brazil and lamented that the little time that went to pass in the Rio not allowed her to see Brasilia. She also cogitated that in the return, perhaps a short trip until there.

Affection in the press conference

In Harry Stone´s house, the representative of the Motion Pictures Association in Brazil, was the place for a cocktail party for the press and the classic press conference.

Marlene appeared very radiating and likeable in a tailleur beige, hat of pens that they joined her hair, high and fine shoes with covering of shining rocks. Always smiling and in a soft voice, she did not leave nobody without reply.

But she did not feel comfortable with the spotlights of TV and the photographers. Those that tried to photograph her in close up had been frustrate.

Or she came so close to the camera or then she lowered the head sufficiently, offering only the hat. Sometimes she made a delicate signal for the operator who soon erased the lights. Sternberg was the dramatical, Lubitsch was sophisticated and the Mamoulian the only one that it could transform me into the interpreter of “Song of songs”.
- Are you in this photo? (the reporter showed a photo of Marlene at five years old)
- Yes, but hide it…
- You find that the TV goes to finish with the cinema?
- It has place for the both

War: About world war II, Marlene said: “It was a relief sensation and happiness that felt how much everything finished and I felt me alive, after 3 years of active service between the soldiers”

After the interview, Marlene was introduced to the artists and personalities. She talked and was photographed with Ângela Maria, Cill Farney, Miro Cerni, Alberto Ruschel and Odete Lara.
Marlene only went away after to take care of to all that they desired to make questions or simply to show their admiration.

Depoimentos Exclusivos

Parte superior do formulário

Exclusive depositions

Many people saw Marlene Dietrich well close, others had coexisted with her, here are some depositions:

For the doctor Sila de Silva Souza, Marlene Dietrich is his favorite actress and was a true accomplishment to see her show in the Golden Roon of the Copacabana Palace in 1959.

Sila remembers: “I and a friend my, who liked movies, went to see Marlene in the Copacabana, because she is my favorite actress. We seat well close to her, the show was magnificent, at the first part she appeared just with the dress and the traditional white coat and at the Second part she appeared with the famous masculine suit. Later she danced with some dancers, was unforgettable”.

Today the actress Iolanda Soares, who started als chambermaid, worked in the Copacabana Palace at the time fixing clothes of several actresses als Sonia Dutra, Zélia Hoffmann and Marlene Dietrich, “I kept an excellent impression of her, I helped her to dress, and she was very likeable with me, exactly we speaking in different languages”.

“The room where she was dressed was separate of her dressing-room, where she put her makeup and had her hair arranged, I think that this team was personal of her” “What I remember very well is that she used that little cane in one of the numbers of her show with the dancers”

**********************************

But the bank clerk Hilton de Almeida Pinto was more privileged, he and his friend, the actor Renato Pedrosa (the Everaldo of the brasilian novel “Dancin Days”) had had an ample contact with Dietrich.

The both had to see she arriving in the Galeão airport where also it had a multitude waiting for her. However the meeting happened later in the Hotel. As Renato Pedrosa was very good in English, after to see the show, they look for Marlene in the dressing-room.

Hilton counts that Marlene was very likeable, considerate, had been friends, also Hilton obtained to take a photo in side of her, where the both are with the face glue and she is with a tophat.

Exactly with the fame of very vain person, Marlene allowed the presence of her new friends at moment where the makeup girl removed her makeup ” Closer she was not that beauty from the screens, but exactly thus, she was a very interesting woman”

“She lived complaining of the fact of the bathroom to be far from the dressing-room. She knew to improvise very well that history of the sand bucket” The three had been friends, went by car to all the places of Rio De Janeiro.

Hilton remembers a very interesting fact when in one of these trips by night, Marlene decided that she wanted anyway to drink a coffee with milk, and as almost all the bars already were closed, the three had been to the Talia Cafe in Tiradentes square.

Curiously, in the Cafe, nobody recognized Marlene, They just to perceive that she was some “gringa”, but exactly thus, a very showy gringa. Of all the memorys of Hilton, the most interesting and revealing, were of that the great record “Dietrich in Rio” was produced in studio, with records of the show and with records in the studio followed of applauses. Hilton wents with her until the studio (inside of one fusca) that it was close to the old Olimpia Cinema but cannot enter. “She sangs musics in the show that are not in the record”

******

Jose Azambuja, was in the Salgado Filho airport, in Porto Alegre especially to see her: “I remember that I knew the airplane that brought Marlene from São Paulo would make a swilling scales in Porto Alegre before following for Buenos Aires and I could not to go until seeing she there.

When the airplane arrived, she almost did not go down why it had much people for there, but finally she went down and practically was dragged by the multitude of the track until the airport. I saw her so close, of front, and what it impressed me was the fact of she was very young, therefore I wise person who she already had age sufficiently.

The skin was very white, blue eyes, very elegant and the body with everything on. Although I had taken pencil and paper, I did not obtain an autograph, because it had much tumult and confusion and Marlene seemed to be very contented with this, she laughs all the time , I believe she was very contented for all that reception, perhaps she already did not have this in the United States.

She shot a shoe to the multitude, I can imagine what they had made with this shoe, must be valid a good money in an international auction… She went to a press room where she was interviewed, the people only could see her through a glass door. She initially did not want to seat, perhaps why she already had been excessively seated for a long time in the airplane trip”.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358762139797121218" style="FLOAT: right; A estrela trazia consigo 28 malas.

Marlene Dietrich arrives in Brazil

Marlene Dietrich became the subject of all the colloquies since that her airplane arrives in those distant July 24 1959.
She came in an airplane of Varig, that had become her favourite aerial company therefore they had improvised a bed for the star.

The star brought 28 luggages. A great multitude was waiting in the neighborhoods of airport, providing to her one of the greaters and warmer demonstrations of affection and admiration of her life.
Marlene was surrounded by the multitude in delirium.

Many people had obtained to kiss her hand, touch her. Even with the pushes she kept the good humor with one constant smile.
